Slavery or workers rights?

The slavery vs antislavery debate seemed like it was starting to fuel the rise of workers rights. These slave owners kept repeating how they wanted to treat their slaves with love and respect. They just want better conditions for them. This sparked my interest a lot. Especially because later worker’s rights movement begins.

Thomas Robert Due notion that slaves are almost a different breed and are not the same species as the white man was wild. Most of these slave owners on up to issues that slavery has but still benefits off the usage of slaves. He was doctor that used slaves to future medicine. Which is good to hear that medicine started from black people, but again did not categorized them as the  same species so I guess its cancels out.

James Henley Cornwell was a very religious man. He believed that it was slaves were given this job by the grace of God. Also argued that God had slaves. I do not believe that is what God had in mind but then again back in this time religion was a driving factor for many issues and policies during this time. He does seem like he has sympathy for slaves. He wanted slaves to stay with families He even supported his slaves financially. This is nice to hear that he treated his slaves nice but that does not account for the thousands of slaves that are beaten and raped by his slave owning colleagues.

The rest of the slave holders had the same points. This biggest driving point was economics. That slaves heavily influence the economics. The slaves would pick cotton for nothing, so the profit was greater. Which is valid in the sense that the South economy was heavily influenced by their crops that were grown.

Another point that kept being repeated was this thought that “I do not treat my slaves badly”. That does not help the case for slavery. Just because you out of thousands do not does not cancel out the rest of the slave owners.
