Band of Angels

The 1957 romance/ drama of Band of Angels was very interesting. The biggest thing to spark my interest was definitely the whole one drop rule aspect. The girl’s life turned upside down after figuring out she is partly black. Which I find odd.

The actress doesn’t look black at all. I understand that this is the 50s and they do not actually use black actresses, but I thought it was a bit odd. Her playing a black character honestly takes away from the theme of the story. I can not truly understand her story because all I can see is that she is white.

Watching her being sold and be treated as a slave honestly made me feel nothing because she is not mixed. She has absolutely no black characteristics. Honestly, I felt like I would have enjoyed the movie more if she just dealt with some discrimination after figuring out, she’s a percentage black. This whole notion of watching her suffer like she was a black slave just made me angry.

One thing that stuck out to me in particular was definitely watching Hamish Bond. I immediately noticed him because he was in our previous movie. I was intrigued on the way he treated his slaves. His slaves were treated very nicely. They had nice clothing and were treated with respect. We are so trained to see slaves being punished and poorly treated it almost feels weird seeing them being treated humanely. Hamish’s character is a character that is very particular.
