Forty
Acres and Mule is such a common phrase, but I never really knew the context of
why it is used. Andrew gives a great explanation on why it is used. The fact
that Jackson promised these people an acre of land and a mule is outlandish.
An acre for the number of slaves they had is not going to happen. An acre is a
lot and there were thousands of slaves. This also being a black only event makes
me feel like there was a lot of push back.
Not going to lie the Ku Klux Klan conversation made me slightly
uncomfortable. I never actually knew the history of the KKK. The fact it was started
by former confederates is telling. This also further proves that the Civil War
was about slavery. I was very peaked of interest when I realized they killed
white republicans.
I think the switch of political parties is so important to
US history. The original democratic party was the original racist, and
Republicans being not. What we know of these parties now are completely different
from what they were back then. The fact that John Kennedy is the reason there
was a big switch.
The fact they created an act because of the kkk is beyond wild.
They basically created an act that outlaw hate crimes. The fact it got so bad
that habeus corpus can be suspended is horrible. I know the KKK is bad and
honestly terrifying but knowing that they are the reason hate crime is illegal.
I am glad that this led to the fall of the KKK.
