We are introduced to this character Scarlett O’Hara. She is
introduced as an almost perceived as a ditzy and boy crazy character. We also
introduced to her slaves. They seem like they have a good relationship. Mammy
and Scarlet t relationship is almost like a mother and daughter relationship.
Mammy takes good care of Scarlett and makes sure Scarlett is okay and making good
choices. Even though there was a definite power dynamic, the pairing seemed to
have a mutual love and trust for each other
The character Mammy is a very important character to me.
Other than the fact her name is rooted from minstrel shows, she is honestly a
strong character. I would not put her as
a lead just because she does disappear throughout the movie. Even though
she has no rights she is definitely resourceful.
The men get called to war and it is revealed how much Scarlett
loves her friend’s husband. Honestly that is very disrespectful. If you are a
true friend, you should NEVER go after a friend’s significant other. Scarlett
becomes very two faced. She is showing the world and Ashely (the man she wants)
that she is happy and is moved on but is actually deeply in love with him.
As the war continue, we watch the protagonist go through a
lot of struggles. It is a big contrast because in the beginning she was basically
be fed with a gold spoon but by the end of it she is getting a taste of hard
work. I would honestly argue that she was pretty bratty at one point. She was complaining
about basically helping. She had many chances to leave and go home but she
chose not to because of Ashely. She promised him to take care of HIS WIFE while
he was gone. I don’t know why it did not click for her there that he does not want
her, but to each there own.
The lack of female empowerment or any sort of strong female of
lead is what stuck out for me. You could argue that Scarlett was a “strong”
lead but I argue that because she did everything for the man. She never truly
fought for what she wanted. The only opinion she had was that Ashely loves her
like he loves his wife.
